2019 Jacopo Biondi Santi Castello di Montepo 'Poggio Ferro' Sangiovese Toscana
Sourced from the iron-rich “Poggio Ferro” Cru, this 100% BBS11 Sangiovese thrives on rugged, windswept, south-facing slopes near the Mediterranean. A stunning bouquet of violets, lavender, and hibiscus leads to flavors of tart red cherries, rhubarb, cranberry tea, and red plums, all layered with grilled rosemary, thyme, and a deep mineral edge. Big, silky tannins frame the wine’s remarkable depth, balance, and structure, finishing with an intensity that lingers for days.
From the legendary Jacopo Biondi Santi and his son, Tancredi, this estate is redefining Tuscan excellence. 100 points—and built to age for decades. Do not miss this rare gem!
Tasting Panel
Poggio Ferro is a south-facing plot of Sangiovese planted between 1,056 and 1,130 feet in elevation. Also fermented with native yeast, this expression boasts the seamless intergration of cedar with light toast from aging in Stockinger/Taransaud barrels. Red cherry, spiced plum, blood orange peel, dried rose petal and rooibos tea meld with loverly notes of crushed stones and velvet- textured tannins. Grilled herbs and dark chocolate emerge on the long finish of iron and stone. Beautiful, compact, and remarkable.
