2022 Marine Layer 'Marine Layer Vineyard' Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Planted in 2016, Marine Layer’s six-acre estate vineyard sits on a southwest-facing slope of sandy Goldridge soils, the beating heart of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. A mix of Calera, Mt. Eden, Dijon 667, 115, and suitcase selections, the vineyard captures the cool-climate purity and coastal energy that define this region.
The 2022 Pinot Noir glows ruby in the glass, offering a perfumed nose of raspberries, pomegranate, coastal forest, and savory herbs. Silky and medium-bodied, it flows with juicy red fruits, black tea–like tannins, and forest-floor depth, finishing long and graceful with layers of nuance that promise even more with time. Already turning heads: “A real charmer… pure, expansive fruit with a long, clean finish.” – Jeb Dunnuck. Only 500 cases produced.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Marine Layer Vineyard is the finest wine I have ever tasted from Marine Layer. Rich and sumptuous, with stunning textural depth, the 2022 is seriously impressive. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, cloves, menthol, licorice, and dried flowers build in the glass, saturating the palate on the way to its explosive finish. The 2022 is a blend of Calera, Mt Eden, and suitcase clones, with a healthy dollop (40%) of whole clusters.

Their estate Pinot, the 2022 Pinot Noir Marine Layer Vineyard is based on the Calera, Mt. Eden, Dijon, 115, and 667 clones, and it sees 35% whole cluster, but it doesn’t rear its head overtly. The wine is a youthful ruby red hue and has deeper, more expressive layers of black raspberries, grenadine, forest floor, and sweet forest herbs. Medium-bodied, it has a ripe but very pure feel, with a great deal of pure, expansive fruit filling the palate and a long, clean finish. A real charmer, it will only improve if given the chance to lean into its more earth-toned tea notes. Drink 2025-2040.

This powerful, focused and concentrated wine comes from a small vineyard owned by Marine Layer's founders, planted with Calera, Mt. Eden and suitcase clones gleaned from Burgundy. Offers incredible black-cherry, bay-leaf, forest-floor and black-tea flavors. 40% whole clusters in the fermentation. Drink now or hold.
