The benchmark of Napa elegance returns in magnificent form. Deep crimson in the glass, the 2022 Insignia soars with aromas of blackberry compote, espresso, and cocoa, wrapped in savory whispers of herbes de Provence and cured tobacco. The palate is plush yet composed—cardamom, nutmeg, and black cherry glide across fine-grained tannins in a finish that lasts for days. This is power meeting polish, a masterclass in balance and pedigree. A collector’s dream—drink now or cellar with reverence.

Don’t wait—2022 Insignia will define this decade of Napa greatness. Secure yours before it disappears.

Joseph Phelps has long been one of Napa Valley’s stalwarts. For more than 30 years, they have been a pacesetter for critically acclaimed wines. As Robert Parker wrote of their flagship red, 'The Insignia cuvée has been one of Napa’s great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines since its inception in 1974' and Wine Spectator observed that Phelps is 'one of Napa Valley's benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon producers.' Their focus is on world-class standards, top growers and meticulous cellar triage with Insignia seeing only the best components each year. Phelps has a web of vineyards that would make any winemaker excited to go to work. The winery has been working exclusively with estate-owned fruit sources since 2004, and their specific sites are exceptional. They know every nuance of the land and can conjure magic and bottle thunder. And as evidenced by the press for the 2008 Insignia, Phelps’ continued march towards exclusively estate-owned vineyards is paying handsome rewards.

Deeply brooding, refined aromas of blackcurrants, bitter chocolate, blood plums, dark cherries, cedar and coffee beans. The palate is full-bodied with firmly framed tannins and bright acidity that lead into a structured yet silky-smooth and savory finish. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot, 2% malbec and 2% cabernet franc. Great to drink young, or will reward after time in bottle. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Insignia is a beautifully structured and expressive wine. It opens with savoury wild herb notes—spearmint, bay laurel, and high-toned cinnamon spice—lifted by elegant red florals. A core of crunchy red fruit delivers ripe density balanced by energy and tension. Cocoa powder tannins provide grip without heaviness, and the finish is exceptional in length, refined and savoury. This is a poised and polished wine that confidently delivers the goods.

The 2022 Insignia is a similar blend to the 2021 and checks in as 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% each of Malbec and Cabernet that's still resting in new barrels. It has a terrific dense purple/plum color as well as a perfumed, lifted nose of red and blue fruits, candied flowers, chocolate, and nicely integrated oak. Medium to full-bodied, it's balanced, shows the plush, riper style of the vintage, has good tannins, and outstanding length.
