This Bien Nacido Syrah entices with a nose of violets, lavender, and a touch of graphite. Evolving in the glass, the bouquet continues to unveil layers of blackcurrant, anise, and roasted herbs. On the palate, layered dark fruit balances notes of leather, and a subtle thread of earthiness, both fresh and sophisticated.

A waypoint is an intermediate point or place on a route or line of travel. In modern terms, it most often refers to coordinates that specify one’s position on the globe. In the wine world, one’s waypoint tells a unique story of time and place in the glass. Waypoint was born out of the idea of spotlighting singlevineyard properties, throughout California, to highlight the unique terroir and characteristics of each of these singular plots of dirt. Between Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, Waypoint was one of the first brands in California to place an emphasis on sourcing fruit from one specific locale and giving it the credit it was due.

Winemaker Matt Sands presented a barrel sample of this Syrah from the famous Bien Nacido Vineyards in California’s Santa Maria Valley. From blocks 41a1, 41a2, and 49, Clones 174, 470 and the Estrella Clone all conspire to present a profoundly aromatic, expressive and complex Syrah. Leads with dark, brooding black fruits, tobacco, dried violets, and charcuterie and delivers a medium-bodied red overflowing with plums and cherries and framed by a voluptuous mid-palate texture backed by tangy blood orange acidity. A long finish reveals dark chocolate, white pepper, and dried herbs. So delicious. Aged 12 months in 30% new French oak.
