“Las Aves” is John and Robert’s answer to the Spanish region of Priorat, where ancient-vine Carignane and Grenache are blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and occasionally Syrah. They say “Our Niemi Vineyard Carignane, planted in the 1950s, works beautifully with Cabernet Sauvignon, lending an earth and structure component to the ripe fruit profile of the Cabernet. The blend is made complete by the floral character of Sawyer Vineyard Grenache and the density and midpalate of Lawer Vineyard Syrah.” 

We loved this wine’s notes of toasted nuts, brandied cherries, and its spicy, warm personality. The winery describes it as “Aromatic dark berry fruit of cassis and blackberry with an intriguing forest floor element.” This would be a fantastic pairing with a long-simmered pot roast or even something like Portuguese goat stew.
