2010 Roy Estate Proprietary Red Napa Valley

A beautifully expressive vintage from Roy Estate and Philippe Melka, the 2010 Proprietary Red is the product of tiny yields and meticulous selection. Seductive aromas of blueberry, blackberry, mocha, espresso, and violet lead into a plush, layered palate. Notes of dark chocolate, sweet black cherry, and exotic florals unfold over a core of vibrant acidity and polished, powerful tannins.

The integration of new French oak is seamless, supporting a finish of remarkable length and finesse. This is a Napa Valley red that combines richness and elegance in equal measure—accessible now, yet built to evolve for years to come.

Some wines we offer you very clearly illustrate the mission of Bounty Hunter, and what sets us apart from our peers. Roy Estate, tucked away in Soda Canyon on the eastern edge of Napa Valley, is a prime example. We’ve been supporters since their inaugural vintage [2004], and now that the wine is garnering monster scores, we’re in prime position to get a great allocation of their incredibly small production. It’s what we do. With the help of Helen Turley, in 2002 Shirley Roy and her husband, the late Charles Roy, developed this very rocky site, once home to a Wappo indian village. Today the Roys’ Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and vines are about 14 years old, and certainly coming into their prime. And with Philippe Melka on board—an alum of Petrus, Dominus, and Ridge—the winemaking acumen in play has next to no peers in the Valley. It shows in the wines, which are ripe and viscerally thrilling!

Vinous

Roy's 2010 Proprietary Red has a little more delineation and nuance than the 2009. Freshly cut flowers, violets, super ripe dark fruit, mocha, espresso, chocolate, plums, cassis and black currants all jump from the glass in this opulent full-bodied huge wine. Layers of fruit continue to build to the creamy, expressive finish. In 2010, the blend is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.

Wine Advocate

The 2010 Proprietary Red (71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot) exhibits lots of dusty, loamy soil notes and a strong minerality in its masculine, dense, medium to full-bodied style with relatively elevated tannins. This big, backstrapping, loaded red requires another 3-4 years of bottle age. It should continue to evolve for 15-20 years.
